Incomplete sexual precocity in boys and girls may occur with the McCune-Albright syndrome. This syndrome is characterised by the triad of irregularly edged hyperpigmented macules (cafe-au-lait spots), polyostotic fibrous dysplasia, and GnRH- independent sexual precocity (Fig. 13.36). Patients may have autonomously functioning ovarian cysts but may also manifest autonomous hyperfunction of the thyroid, adrenal gland, pituitary gland (especially GH oversecretion), and parathyroid glands. Development of cafe-au-lait spots may occur after infancy and may not be apparent in the new-born period.
